Introduction
Assets in Place are rarely static — they evolve through reviews, feedback, and ongoing updates. Place automatically keeps a record of every version of an asset that is uploaded, giving you a full history of changes and the ability to go back to any point in that history.
Why use asset versions?
- Track how an asset has changed over time and understand what was updated and when
- Compare versions to review changes before approving or publishing
- Restore an earlier version if a change was made in error or a previous version is needed again
- Decide whether to keep a full history or keep your library tidy by removing versions you no longer need
Use examples
- A marketing team wants to reuse an older version of an asset that performed well in a past campaign but has since been updated. Restoring the previous version saves time compared to re-creating or re-uploading the older file.
- A creative team experiments with multiple variations of an asset but later decides a prior version is more aligned with the project's goals. Restoring it removes the need to redo the work manually.
How asset versions work
Viewing versions
To access the version history for an asset:
- Navigate to Place and open the asset you want to review
Click on the Versions tab of the asset
You will see a list of all available versions of the asset, ordered from newest to oldest.
Keeping or removing previous versions
You have two options when uploading a version. You can keep the previous version, or delete the previous version and replace it completely. You may want to remove older versions to keep your library tidy, or retain them to preserve a full audit trail of changes.
Comparing versions
You can visually compare any two versions of an asset side by side — useful for reviewing what has changed before making a decision on which version to use.
To compare two versions:
- In the versions panel, select the three dots against the version you want to compare
- You can compare any two versions, including historical versions — you are not limited to comparing against the current version.
- Choose your preferred comparison mode:
- Horizontal — versions displayed one above the other
- Vertical — versions displayed side by side
- Slider — drag a dividing line across the asset to reveal one version beneath the other
Restoring a previous version
If you need to revert to an earlier version of an asset, you can restore it in a few steps. The restored version becomes the new current version of the asset.
To restore a previous version:
- In the versions panel, click the three dots next to the version you want to restore
- Select Restore from the dropdown menu
- Click Restore in the pop-up window to confirm
The earlier version is now the current version of the asset.
