When Place automatically crops an image to create thumbnails or variants, it needs to know which part of the image matters most. Without that guidance, a crop can cut off a face, a logo, or anything else that has to stay visible. The focus point tells Place exactly which spot to protect, so your automatic crops always keep the right part of the image in frame.
Who can use it?
There's nothing to enable — the focus point editor is available to all users with the right permissions.
- Users with Edit permission on the asset can set or change its focus point.
- If the asset has variants, you'll need Manage Image Variant permission instead, since changing the focus point affects every variant generated from that asset.
The focus point option only appears for image assets.
How Focus Point works
Setting the focus point from the asset detail page
This is the fastest way to set a focus point on a single asset.
- Open the asset's detail page.
- Click More (…) in the header.
- Select Change focus point. The focus point editor opens in its own window, showing the marker on the image.
- Drag the marker to the spot you want to protect, or type the position directly into the X and Y percentage fields. The marker and the fields stay in sync with each other.
- Click Save.
Once saved, the new focus point applies immediately everywhere the asset is auto-cropped — thumbnails, variants, and any other automatic crop.
Setting the focus point from the image variants flow
You can also set the focus point as part of managing an asset's variants.
- Open the asset's detail page.
- Go to the Download tab.
- Open Asset variants.
- Use the focus point editor the same way as above — drag the marker or type X/Y percentages, then save.
Note: This was previously the only way to set a focus point, and it's still available if you're already working within the variants flow.
