Search by Image

Sometimes the quickest way to describe what you’re looking for is to show it. Search similar lets you search your archive with an image, or start from an asset you’ve already found, and see the assets that look most like it. This helps when no file name, tag or keyword describes what you need.

Who can use it?

Search similar is available in any archive where AI search is enabled. It is switched on automatically when you enable AI search in Place settings, so there is nothing extra to set up.

How Search similar works

Search similar uses the same AI model as AI search. The model creates a description of what each image looks like, called an embedding, based on its shapes, colors, subjects and composition. It then compares those descriptions to find the closest matches. Results are based on how images look, not on their file names, tags or metadata.

Search with an image you upload

Note: You can upload PNG, JPG, GIF or WEBP files up to 10 MB.

1. Go to your archive.
2. Click the camera icon in the search bar.
3. Drag in an image, or browse for one on your computer.

The archive shows the matching assets. A thumbnail of your image appears in the search bar. Click it to see the image, or clear it to go back to your previous results.

Search from an asset in the archive

1. Find an image asset in grid or list view.
2. Open the More actions menu on the asset.
3. Select Search similar.

Search from the asset detail

1. Open an image asset.
2. Go to the Similar assets tab.
3. Select Search similar on any card to start a new search from that asset.

This is a quick way to refine your results. If an asset is close but not quite right, start a new search from it.

Search similar is also available in asset pickers.
