What is the difference between Global and Local categories?

Categories help you organize and filter assets and other content in a more flexible way than using folders alone.

There are two types of categories in Place: Global categories and Local categories.

Local categories 

Local categories are specific to an individual Place archive.

This means a local category structure created for one archive cannot be used in another archive. For example, if you have separate Logos and Images archives, a local category created in the Logos archive will only be available for assets within that archive.

Global categories

Global categories can be used across multiple archives and Papirfly applications. This makes them useful for information that should be consistent across different areas of your portal.

Depending on your configuration, global categories can also be used across other Papirfly products, including:

• Place: categorize and filter assets across multiple archives
• Point: use categories to 'pre-filter' asset pages to direct users to related content
• Plan: categorize list items and other selectable content
• Produce: organize the template library & option to use to control the selection of assets available to choose from in each template
• Prove: filter related content and metrics by category

Where can I find categories?

Administrators with the appropriate permissions can manage category structures from the Category Manager in Place.

Available categories can also be viewed and used through the Categories menu when browsing or filtering assets.

Categories may also appear as filters within Point pages where category filtering has been enabled.

Why can’t I see all categories?

The categories shown to users can depend on the content currently being viewed.

For example, if a Point page only displays assets from the Images archive, users will only see categories that are currently used by assets available within that view.

Similarly, unused categories may be hidden from standard users when searching or filtering, as there are no matching assets to display.

Uploaders, editors and administrators may still see additional categories when adding or editing asset information.
